Object Name Ledger
Scope & Content This collection contains a ledger belonging to William Wright of Savannah, Georgia with various records from 1853 to 1876. Since Wright worked as a broker, there are lists of property throughout Savannah being sold and rented as well as lists of slaves that were sold by Wright from 1853 to 1865. In addition, Wright worked as a chairman for the Department of Health and Cemetery in Savannah and there are written receipts showing the amount workers received from Wright for working in the city's cemeteries. There are also records of deaths from the yellow fever epidemic in 1876 included in this ledger. These records list the names of the people who died daily because of the disease and notes the person's age, race, and cemetery in which they were buried. Also included are lists of articles taken from prisoners throughout 1865 and accounts against other Georgia counties due to Savannah for jailing their prisoners in 1866 to 1867.
