Catalog Number MS 207-01-01-10
Object Name Documents
Scope & Content This collection consists of correspondence, military commissions, and genealogical notes of General Jean Baptiste de Caradeuc and Jean Jacques Achille de Caradeuc. The collection contains a bound volume of Achille de Caradeuc's notes, 1893, a genealogical scroll, 1896, and eight folders of loose papers, prints, visual materials, and one unbound notebook. The papers are in chronological order spanning 1771-1894, and with few exceptions are written in French.

Achille de Caradeuc's notes and memoirs comment on the 1886 Charleston earthquake, the 1881 Tybee Island hurricane, and the Charleston hurricanes of 1885 and 1893. Several papers have been reproduced from the Southern Historical Collection at the University of North Carolina.

Loose papers in the collection include correspondence between the general and his family in France, a commission signed by Louis XVI in 1776, and military papers and orders pertinent to the general's activities in Santo Domingo, 1790-1792.

Genealogical notes and a scroll titled Tableau E. la Toisson, tableau des Alliances, 1896, are housed within the collection. The scroll was translated and transcribed by a volunteer in 2008 and is available in the Georgia Historical Society genealogy vertical files.

Also included are reproductions of photo miniatures of Louis, Marquis de la Toison Rocheblanche and Marquis de la Caison Rocheblanche; a lithograph of Louis Rene de Caradeuc; and an original painting of Azalia nudiflora (wild azalea) signed by A. deC.

The folder containing visual materials is noted as "VM" in the collection inventory.
